13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings
and fulfill my vows to You—
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to You
and an offering of rams;
I will offer bulls and goats.
How familiar it is to cry out to God with promises of our faithfulness when we are facing times of trouble. We want to think we could offer God something to appease and lighten the weight of our challenge, but what He looks for is not the sacrifice of an animal but the repentance of a humble heart. He wants us to come to Him on the basis of the hope of His promises to us that are far greater than any promise we could bring to Him.
Father, You alone are holy in your great power and powerful in your great holiness. I come into your presence by the sacrifice of your holy Son who offered Himself in my place. Forgive me, Father, for the times I have made You promises to appease my circumstance instead of looking to the firm hope of your grace. Help me live in the promises of your holy Word that will sustain me through any trouble that my day may bring, so nothing would hinder my praise of your great name. You alone are worthy of all praise, Amen.
